Leadership is extremely important in Scouting, and it is a big focus in BSA Troop 145. We have an election every six months so that we can get several boys to gain leadership experience. Leadership roles are either elected or appointed positions. Leadership experience is necessary to fulfill certain rank requirements especially Star, Life and Eagle. The following requirements are necessary for leadership roles:


The role of Patrol Leader is an elected position. Each Patrol must have an elected patrol leader. The Assistant Patrol Leader position for each patrol is appointed by the Patrol Leader. There are no age or rank requirements to be Patrol Leader or Assistant Patrol Leader.


* For Senior Patrol Leader and Patrol Leaders, you must be elected into the position.

** A Scout can be in a certain leadership position for 2 consecutive terms. He must vacate the position for one term before trying again for that same position.



Requirements for all other leadership roles:

  • A Scout must be First Class Rank or higher to hold any leadership positions other than Patrol Leader and Assistant Patrol Leader

  • A Scout must agree to do the extra work needed to fulfill the role

  • A Scout must be present at all/most meetings

  • A Scout must “apply” for the position to be considered for the role

  • A Scout must successfully interview for the position

  • A Scout must have scout spirit

  • A Scout must set a good example for younger Scouts at all times

  • The Scoutmaster and SPL have final say on all leadership roles

Leadership Positions

Senior Patrol Leader

  • Runs all troop meetings, events, activities,

  • Runs the patrol leader council

  • Appoints assistant senior patrol leaders

  • Assign troop members specific jobs

  • Assists with training


Patrol Leader

  • Plans and leads patrol meetings and activities

  • Appoints assistant patrol leaders

  • Keeps patrol members informed

  • Assigns patrol members specific jobs

  • Represents his patrol at Patrol Leader meetings


Troop Guide - 2 Position Available

  • Trains new Scouts, helps new Scouts get to First Class Rank

  • Coaches Patrol Leader for younger patrols

  • Attends Patrol Leader Council meetings


Den Chief - 2 Positions Available

  • Serves as activities assistant for the cub pack and webelo dens

  • Helps lead dens to achieve their goals

  • Helps lead weekly den meetings

  • Helps with recruitment for the Troop through the Pack


Scribe

  • Attends meetings, keeps a log, takes attendance at events

  • Helps Advancement Chair with tracking advancement progress


Librarian

  • Sets up and takes care of the Troop Library

  • Keeps records of books for the troop

  • Adds new books to the library

  • Keeps track of borrowed books


Historian

  • Gathers pictures and facts about the troop activities

  • Takes care of trophies, ribbons, and souvenirs

  • Keeps information about former members of the troop


Quartermaster

  • Keeps records of equipment

  • Makes sure equipment is in good working order

  • Helps people use equipment and make sure it is returned


Outdoor Ethics Guide

  • Makes sure the troop adheres to the principles of the outdoor code, leave no trace, tread lightly

  • Makes sure all activities have a cleaning crew

  • Gets cleaning crew to clean up after events/meetings


Chaplains Assistant

  • Helps the Chaplain assist Scouts in experiencing their Duty to God

  • Helps the Chaplain with facilitating meetings

  • Helps the Chaplain getting Scouts to complete Duty to God awards at summer camp
