Frequently Asked Questions

Can my son still play sports?

Answer - Yes, participation in Scouts is completely voluntary. If our meetings conflict with practice or games, the Scout should prioritize appropriately. Advancement activities occur during meetings, events and camping, so missing too many might set a Scout back in terms of completing requirements. There are a lot of Scouts who play sports and are still able to balance the demands of both.

Are meetings mandatory?

Answer - meetings are 100% voluntary, but advancement activities occur during meetings, events and camping, so missing too many might set a Scout back in terms of completing requirements.

Do new Scouts need to buy a bunch of things right away?

Answer - Our preference is that your Scout have the most recent version of the Boy Scout Handbook as soon as possible. Our preference also is that your Scout have a Class A uniform no later than the first Court of Honor that they attend. Beyond that, anything else can be purchased in time from the Scout Shop in Mountainside, NJ: https://ppcbsa.org/about-us/shop/.

Can I bring a sibling on a camping trip?

Answer - Yes, siblings are most welcome on our trips, but our budget is set to pay for our Scouts and participating adults only, so siblings require an extra fee per trip to be paid by the parents. The fee depends on the overall cost of the trip to the Troop. A parent must also accompany the sibling on the trip. The safety and well-being of any siblings that attend are solely the responsibility of their parents.

Do parents need to come to meetings, events or camping?

Answer - Our Troop is only successful because of strong support from our parents. Moms and Dads are most welcome at our meetings, events and camping, but their attendance is not required except during certain meetings designated as mandatory (such as informational sessions about summer camp). If you would like to attend camping/events and drive Scouts, you must be named on our charter (which requires a fee) and complete an online Youth Protection class periodically.

I can't drive my son to camping trips and events, can he still go?

Answer - Yes, we have the ability to carpool Scouts. Our adult leaders are Youth Protection trained and willing to help. If your Scout needs a ride to an event/camp, please provide us with as much notice as possible. If government or BSA rules around social distancing change, we may need to adjust our carpooling and tenting policies accordingly.
